I don't get what's so bad about going to a store and buying condoms. I mean, unless someone you know works at the store and you'll be teased mercilessly about your purchase of an enormous pack of cheap non-lubricated condoms. That I understand.

Yeah I just dealt with that a couple weeks ago, when I had the 19 year old hand me the condom and tell me to put it on (the mic pack).
Then my friend who is in charge of the tech for the theater group says his best Amazon order ever: 100 Trojans. He got a lot of giggles out of that I guess.
Furare, it's not that it's a box of condoms, but if you're doing 16 mics for a 2 weekend show, and you rehearse with the mics several times, you're talking a stockpile of condoms. I could see how that would be embarassing. We did 3 rehearsals and 6 shows, for a total of 144 condoms, not counting the ones that tore while putting them on the mics and had to be replaced.

I think it's pretty clear that if you're buying that many it's either for a health class or some other non-sex-related purpose. It might be amusing if the shop assistant did have a reaction to that. I dunno, maybe I'm harder to embarrass than I always thought I was.

Hell, if you're gonna buy a gross of condoms, you might as well go all the way and buy five gallons of ice cream, a case of licorice whips, and a tarp, then head to check-out wearing Groucho Marx glasses.

Doesn't everyone wear Groucho Marx glasses when they go to the store?

I got the video joke (thanks to one of the comments), but I'm at a loss as to why you'd need condoms for microphones.

I'm beginning to get why conservative politicians are worried about what kids are learning in school these days.

Ducky--helps keep the sweat from the actors off the mic pack.

Read Kraken by Mieville last week.
A giant squid is stolen from the Natural History Museum and suddenly London stands on the edge of at least one Apocalypse. Maybe more. Who done it and why? Was it the Squid Cultists? The Tattoo? Any of a host of unusual and supernatural agencies running around? It's very much a world where all this crazy stuff is going on, but the rest of us just don't see it. This was a pretty enjoyable read. Definitely a light hearted affair that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's pretty well paced and kept me flipping along wanting to see what happened.
Currently I'm reading Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. It's... odd. I'm about halfway through the book and not sure what's going on. There's a man who talks to cats, rains of fish, ghosts, and a young runaway. It's definitely not your usual novel.

Leif's Kraken description reminded me of my favorite book (which I just read again for, like, the 6th time): Good Omens, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Two awesome authors with very different styles that work great together. Apocalypse antics with angels, demons, and the Antichrist. It combines the satiric humor of Terry Pratchett with Neil Gaiman's writing and descriptions as well as some very memorable characters.

Kafka on the Shore was a very engaging read. Also very thought provoking. There's two main plots, following the like of 15 year old runaway Kafka Tomura and an older illiterate man with some mental problems he acquired as a child in WW2 named Mr. Nakata. He can also speak to cats. Kafka has been cursed by an Oedipal prophecy and runs away from home to escape it and perhaps find his mom and sister. Mr. Nakata begins a journey he doesn't understand. There's a lot of commentary on emptiness, fate, music, and more philosophical quotes than you can shake a middlin' stick at. It was a compelling read that I have to say I enjoyed.

Well, with this new phone I can kind of post here. The biggest problem is how tiny the text looks. This may be a settings issue.

Where do you find these things?
On another random tangent, besides about 10 days in July of high humidity and 90+ degree weather, and then last week where we hit high 80s but not bad humidity, did Ohio even GET summer? It didn't even make 70 here today. These are supposed to be the dog days! Should I be thanking Obama?

Don't worry Joly, Michigan missed the summer memo too. I should not have to worry about whether I need to have a jacket in this state during the months of June, July, and August.

I, for one, am not going to complain about the mild weather. It's only cracked 80 twice all August long here in Southern California. My electric bill and I are thrilled.

It rained. In August. In Texas. Today it might not hit 90. It's amazing.

Yesterday and today have been the nicest days DC has seen all year. 75, not humid at all. Not August weather at all. I'm loving it. Driving with the windows down, walking farther for lunch. Gotta savor it!

Our weather's normal now, but we had *hail* a while back. In a country that is practically on the equator. It was kind of cool =P
