This is the Signup Thread for ROMS XVIII: A Fistful of Bansticks!
Opening Scene:
RULES REVIEW and ROMS Overview
- This game of ROMS is brought to you by the moderators: Bunnylaroo and Vantastic.
- The Rogue OM Squad - or "ROMS", is a forum adaptation of the party game Mafia.
- For a more general introduction to ROMS, you may read the ROMS Overview and New Player Help.
Communication
- Players may post at night. Night posts are encouraged to be entertaining and light.
- The outlaw team may communicate outside the thread.
- Other out-of-thread communication about the game is prohibited among living players.
- Lynches and Duels will reveal alignment and role information, bans will reveal neither.
- Dead players and non-participants may follow along in the Dead Thread. Dead Thread information may not be shared outside the Dead Thread.
This is a role game with a twist
- If the quota for a consensus lynch is not met, but more than half of the town has placed a vote, the two players with the most votes will duel (rules below).
- This ROMS incarnation will have town members, outlaws, roles, money, bounties, and purchasable items.
- Roles may be aligned with the town, with the outlaws, or be neutral (self-aligned). There will be no alignment divination(PWS) for the Town. There will be no medium(role) for any team.
- All roles are listed below, except for one secret role per alignment that will be added in all formats.
- Directly quoting, referencing, or posting screenshots of Moderator PMs is strongly discouraged(we may just mod-kill you for it). Breaking the fourth wall is also discouraged, but will not be punished - we'll just stick our tongues out at you.
Day/Night Cycle
- Days will be 48 hours long, Nights will be 24 hours long. The time of day for deadlines is TBD.
- The town’s choice to Lynch or Duel is decided at the end of each Day.
- Lynches will be carried out at the end of the Day(Dusk).
- Duels and Bans will be carried out at the end of the Night(Dawn). Because of this, duelists may not be banned.
- The moderators will announce the passing of each deadline, and confirm all Lynches and Duels.
- All players may take one action per night. Night actions must be PMed to the Moderators at least 30 minutes before the end of the Night cycle.
Money
- Innocently aligned players will start the game with $30, unless otherwise specified by a role.
- Outlaws share a sum of money as a team, and start with $100 total.
- Players may use their night action to purchase any combination of items from the General Store. Most items are used upon purchase, but a few can be kept and used on later Nights.
Bounties
- Outlaws will begin the game with bounties, and bounties can also be placed upon players. If you defeat a bountied person in a duel, you collect the bounty!
The General Store
Any player may use their Night Action to go to the General Store, and spend money to buy any amount of items. Using Items does not expend a Night Action - buying items does.
These items are used immediately after being bought -
- Place Bounty ($??) - You may place a bounty on any player (or increase an existing bounty).
- Beer ($10) - Each beer will temporarily decrease the Dueling Rank of a target duelist below the next living player.
- Will ($10) - You may bequeath any items, or money, to players in the case of your death. Your will may be altered once per Night cycle after being purchased, by PMing the moderators.
- Ennio Morricone Orchestra ($60) - You hire professional brass to support a target duelist. This increases the duelist’s Rank above three living players or reverses the effect of a role involved in the duel, in the target duelist's favor. For example, if Jack’s role states that they always lose duels to 'The Villian', they will instead win the duel if supported by this orchestra. The town will be made aware of the presence of the Orchestra during the Start of Day scene (but will not know the player it supports).
These items can be held onto by the player(and used during future Nights) -
- Barrel ($30) - By hiding in this barrel, you are able to avoid all night actions and items for which you are the target(except for the Rattlesnake). The barrel is a one-time-use item, usable only on yourself.
- Rattlesnake ($30) - By placing this rattlesnake outside a target's house, you roleblock them (actions from roles are blocked - including bans and hold-ups). If the player is hiding in a barrel, the rattlesnake will find its way into the barrel and scare them out , nullifying any effects of the barrel. The rattlesnake is a one-time-use item.
Voting, Dueling and Lynching
- If less than 50% + 1 of players vote, there will be no lynch/duel.
- If 50% + 1 of players vote for a single person, that person will be lynched by town consensus.
- If 50% + 1 of players vote, but voting is more spread out, there will be a duel between the two candidates with the most votes.
- If Abstain is a leading vote candidate in a duel(first OR second), or if there is a tie for determining the second Duelist, there will be no duel and no lynch.
- Abstains do not count toward the 50% +1 quota.
- In a Duel one person will die, and the victor will collect all bounties placed on the loser.
- The Barkeep(moderator) collects all bounties placed on players that get lynched or banned.
How Duels are Resolved
- Town-aligned players will be assigned a Dueling Rank at the start of the game that represents how skillful they are with a gun. Players with a Dueling Rank will not know what their Dueling Rank is.
- Dueling Ranks are not static numbers - they are more like 'places in line'. As the game progresses, the line gets smaller but the order is maintained.
- In a duel with two players that have a Dueling Rank, their Ranks will be compared after taking into account any items/actions used during the Night that affect the duelists (i.e. beer).
- Outlaws will always lose duels, unless one of the duelists has a role that alters this outcome.
- If both duelists are outlaws, the outlaws may choose who will win the duel.
Town-Aligned Roles
Unnamed Roles:(These roles are revealed upon death)
- The Sheriff - Starts with $100. You do not lose money in Hold-Ups. If you are Held-Up, the outlaws learn that you are the sheriff. You may protect any other player from outlaw-specific actions(Hold-ups and Bans) as your night action. If you shoot and kill The Deputy, you lose your role, any money you have, and your Dueling Rank is reduced permanently below 5 living players. Being skilled with a firearm is a requirement for your position.
- The Deputy - Starts with $50. You are in charge of setting up bounties for the region’s outlaws. As part of your “General Store” Night Action, you may place a $20 bounty on a player free of charge(or increase an existing bounty by $20). You are reasonably proficient with a firearm, but still in training.
- The Banker - As a night action, you may take $30 from your employer(the bank) and give it to any other player(you wouldn't want to get caught red-handed with the cash you're filching). If you are held up by the outlaws, the outlaws receive $100 in addition to the money they take from you. If you are held up by the outlaws, you lose your role.
- The Man and his Bottle - Each drink temporarily increases your Dueling Rank above two living players. If you are sober during a duel, you will automatically lose - even to an outlaw.
- The Man Seeking Vengeance - You will win in a duel against The Six Fingered Man(Outlaw).
Named roles:(These roles are NOT revealed upon death, and may be held by players that have Unnamed Roles)
- Billy - You will lose in a duel against The Six-Fingered Man. The player with this role will not be told that they have this role.
- Jane - You will lose in a duel against The Old Man. The player with this role will not be told that they have this role.
- John - You will lose in a duel against The Old Man. The player with this role will not be told that they have this role.
- Mary - You will lose in a duel against The Villain. The player with this role will not be told that they have this role.
- Jack - You will lose in a duel against The Villain. The player with this role will not be told that they have this role.
- Maggie - You will lose in a duel against The Villain. The player with this role will not be told that they have this role.
Outlaw-Aligned Actions and Roles
Actions-
- Ban: You may ban one person.
- Hold-up (2+ outlaws required): At least two outlaws must commit to this night action. This action steals all money from the person being held up.
Roles-
- The Six-Fingered Man: You have a Dueling Rank just like Town-aligned players. With your Night Action, you can permanently increase your dueling Rank above the next living player. Starts with a $40 bounty.
- The Matriarch : You may use your Night Action to divine whether a person has an unnamed role(i.e. ‘The Banker’), a named role(i.e. ‘Billy’), or no role. Starts with a $60 bounty.
- The Villain : Starts with a $80 bounty.
- Last Outlaw Standing (Acquired Role): The last outlaw standing gains a Dueling Rank higher than all living Town-aligned players. Town members can not gain a higher Dueling Rank than the Last Outlaw Standing through use of items. This outlaw may only be killed by a consensus lynch, or by a role/item effect. The number of outlaws required for a Hold-up is reduced to 1. Rattlesnakes do not affect you. Going to the General Store does not cost you a night action.
Vote formatting
- Votes and unvotes must be formatted as bold and red in order to count.
- To change your vote, you must first unvote your current vote.
Inactivity and Proxies
- ROMS is a time commitment. Dropping out of a game creates an imbalance in the game for the other players. Please sign up only if you can commit to playing.
- Any player who has not posted for one whole Day and Night cycle has 24 hours to make a post or be removed from the game as an inactive. Inactives will be warned at the end of each Night.
- No proxies.
- Should you need to resign, please send the moderators a PM. If a replacement is available, the resigning player will be replaced.
- Alignment of inactive or resigning players that are not replaced will be revealed for the first instance, and then alternate between not-revealed and revealed for any further instances.
The Wiki
-The moderators are not responsible for the wiki. Feel free to maintain it yourselves!
Replacements
-Feel free to signup as a replacement at any time, by posting in the sign-up thread or sending Bunnylaroo or Vantastic a PM.
Game End
-The game ends when we (the moderators) decide that a team has won, and no reasonable/possible actions can change the outcome.
Behavior
-Please remember, this is a GAME. Don't take things personally and don't resort to personal attacks on others. There are real humans behind all the text.

Opening Scene:
It was high noon when the stranger entered the bustling saloon. He stepped inside, head down, his face shielded by the brim of his black hat. The doors hadn't banged shut behind him before it was clear that he had made an impression: a dozen pairs of eyes sized him up, and even the tinny notes of the honky-tonk piano came to an abrupt halt.
Behind the bar, Miss Bunny, roused by the unusual silence, turned to face the newcomer. Atop her head she wore a pair of tattered bunny ears which, like their owner, looked like they had seen better days.
"What'll it be, stranger?" she asked.
"I'm looking for a few good men to join me," he replied, without looking up.
"Ha! I've been lookin' for jus' one good man to join me for a looooong time, sugar, an' I ain't found him yet! We're short on 'good men' 'round these parts, but if you're lookin' for a rascal, or a bandit, or a cardsharp, or a lush, well then, take your pick. Whole place is crawlin' with those!" Miss Bunny's response was greeted with hoots of laughter from the saloon patrons, but the stranger was unmoved.
"If your customers are as rotten as all that, why do you serve them? Why don't you do something to clean up this town?"
Miss Bunny's temper was up now. "Look stranger, if you're fixin' to make a sermon, the preacher's house is down the road. Take it up with him. Alls I do is serve drinks, an' I ain't too fussy 'bout who's buyin' 'em".
"I was like you once," the stranger replied, his voice trembling. "Minded my own business, didn't want to raise any trouble. Then one day a gang of outlaws came to my town. Never got a good look at them - they had their faces covered. They robbed us blind and killed every last one of my friends. They nearly killed me."
At this the stranger raised his head. A long, jagged scar cut across his face, from his forehead to his chin. Miss Bunny stifled a gasp, the color blanching from her face.
"I've tracked that gang of outlaws, and I know they're hiding here. I know what they're going to do. So I'll say it again: I'm looking for a few good men to join me."
One by one, the patrons of the saloon rose to rally around the stranger. Miss Bunny stayed behind the bar, shaking her head. "An' jus' what do ya'll plan to do to when you find these outlaws?" she asked.
"We'll string them up from the nearest tree," the stranger replied. "All except the one who did this to me. I'll meet him in the street at high noon."
Miss Bunny looked at the stranger, a mix of pity and admiration in her tired eyes. "How'll you even recognize him?" she asked quietly. "You said his face was covered."
"I'll know him. My trigger finger will start to itch, and I'll know him."
