I didn't expect the game to be delayed this long, but since it has been, I'm close to being able to play it now. I'm in Spain for the first week of July, and after that I have absolutely nothing to do with my time (unless I manage to find a summer job, but that's unlikely because I can never find a damn job I can do).

HAI GUYS!!!
I am still alive LOL...had a minor real life explosion of insanity, but I'm back! Although I'm beginning to get the feeling that "small interim games" are going to be all our dwindling/increasingly busy community can muster :/ We need fresh blood!

Looking back, I have no idea how we were able to get 30-some people for the larger games. I guess moving to a forum that non-ROMSing people don't see does that.
Edit: Also, I'm withdrawing my signup for now. Vacation will be getting in the way.

Hooray for the return of Bunny! Glad you're okay . On the new blood thing, could we not post a thing in Shore Leave like we've done before? Or other mafia-themed boards?

We did a post in Shore Leave when we first opened the signups, and there was...like no response at all Could do it again I suppose. But I'd like to wait and hear thoughts from Van, since this is really his rodeo. I'm just here to stand around and look pretty.

Thanks I was sad, but also relieved...it was getting harder and harder! I'm not sure if I was more nervous looking at the list of survivors each round or at the next format. I think you've got this round...Apollo can't resist a great belch!

Well, I would still run the game if we got players. Otherwise, it seems DOA.
Maybe nobody wanted to play the game though? The signups were significantly less than previous games. If someone wants to try putting up a more vanilla-ey thread, I do not mind.

I've been running games with 6-7 players. That seems to be where ROMS is at the moment. I don't think it's you or your game. It's a little difficult for me because I don't really enjoy playing games that size, but other people seem to like them. (This is why I've been running the games lately.)
I suppose there's no way you could retool the concept for fewer players? Say 12 or so? I just think Wild West ROMS would be so cool, and that many people might be attainable given everyone loves Westerns. Games that size are even fun for me, so you'd be able to count me in.

I can actually reconsider not playing this semester due to 4 hour gaps and half days compared to completely full days in a row like last semester.
4 hour gaps, two days a week. I'm going loopy.

WESTERN ROMS MINIGAME -the idea here is to take out some mechanics and add a few others to simplify the game so that it can be run with fewer people.
RULES REVIEW and ROMS Overview - This game of ROMS is brought to you by the moderators: Bunnylaroo and Vantastic. - The Rogue OM Squad - or "ROMS", is a forum adaptation of the party game Mafia. - For a more general introduction to ROMS, you may read the ROMS Overview and New Player Help.
Communication - Players may post at night. Night posts are encouraged to be entertaining and light. - The outlaw team may communicate outside the thread. - Other out-of-thread communication about the game is prohibited among living players. - Lynches and Duels will reveal alignment and role information, bans will reveal neither. - Dead players and non-participants may follow along in the Dead Thread. Dead Thread information may not be shared outside the Dead Thread.
This is a role game with a twist - If the quota for a consensus lynch is not met, but more than half of the town has placed a vote, the two players with the most votes will duel (rules below). - This ROMS incarnation will have town members, outlaws, roles, money, bounties, and purchasable items. - Roles may be aligned with the town, with the outlaws, or be neutral (self-aligned). There will be no alignment divination(PWS role) for the Town. There will be no medium(role) for any team. - All roles are listed below, except for one secret role per alignment that will be added in all formats. - Directly quoting, referencing, or posting screenshots of Moderator PMs is strongly discouraged(we may just mod-kill you for it). Breaking the fourth wall is also discouraged, but will not be punished - we'll just stick our tongues out at you.
Day/Night Cycle - Days will be 48 hours long, Nights will be 24 hours long. The time of day for deadlines is TBD. - The town’s choice to Lynch or Duel is decided at the end of each Day. - Lynches will be carried out at the end of the Day(Dusk). - Duels and Bans will be carried out at the end of the Night(Dawn). Because of this, duelists may not be banned. - The moderators will announce the passing of each deadline, and confirm all Lynches and Duels. - All players may take one action per night. Night actions must be PMed to the Moderators at least 30 minutes before the end of the Night cycle.
Money - Innocently aligned players will start the game with $30. - Outlaws share a sum of money as a team, and start with $60 total. - Players may use their night action to purchase any combination of items from the General Store. Some items are used upon purchase, some can be kept and used on later Nights.
Bounties - Outlaws will begin the game with bounties, and bounties can also be placed upon other players. If you defeat a bountied person in a duel, you collect the bounty!
The General Store Any player may use their Night Action to go to the General Store, and spend money to buy any amount of items. Using Items does not expend a Night Action - buying items does.
These items are used immediately after purchase - - Place Bounty ($??) - You may place a bounty on any player (or increase an existing bounty). - Beer ($10) - Each beer will temporarily decrease the Dueling Rank of a target duelist below the next living player.
These items can be held onto by the player(and used during future Nights) - - Barrel ($30) - By hiding in this barrel, you are able to avoid all night actions and items for which you are the target. The barrel is a one-time-use item, usable only on yourself. - Oven Door Plate ($60) - By placing this under your shirt, you ensure that you do not die after losing a duel(your opponent still lives). If you would win the duel by dueling skill, the item is not expended. Otherwise, it is one-use.
Voting, Dueling and Lynching - If less than 50% + 1 of players vote, there will be no lynch/duel. - If 50% + 1 of players vote for a single person, that person will be lynched by town consensus. - If 50% + 1 of players vote, but voting is more spread out, there will be a duel between the two candidates with the most votes. - If Abstain is a leading vote candidate in a duel(first OR second), or if there is a tie for determining the second Duelist, there will be no duel and no lynch. - Abstains do not count toward the 50% +1 quota. - In a Duel one person will die, and the victor will collect all bounties placed on the loser. - The Barkeep(moderator) collects all bounties placed on players that get lynched or banned.
How Duels are Resolved - Town-aligned players will be assigned a Dueling Rank at the start of the game that represents how skillful they are with a gun. Players with a Dueling Rank will not know what their Dueling Rank is. - Dueling Ranks are not static numbers - they are more like 'places in line'. As the game progresses, the line gets smaller but the order is maintained. - In a duel with two players that have a Dueling Rank, their Ranks will be compared after taking into account any items/actions used during the Night that affect the duelists (i.e. beer). - Outlaws will always lose duels, unless one of the duelists has a role that alters this outcome. - If both duelists are outlaws, the outlaws may choose who will win the duel.
Town-Aligned Roles Unnamed Roles:(These roles are revealed upon death) - The Sheriff - You do not lose money in Hold-Ups. If you are Held-Up, the outlaws learn that you are the sheriff. You may protect any other player from outlaw-specific actions(Hold-ups and Bans) as your night action. If you shoot and kill The Deputy, you lose your role, any money you have, and your Dueling Rank is reduced permanently below 5 living players. Being skilled with a firearm is a requirement for your position. Anyone who kills you in a duel becomes The Sheriff. - The Deputy - You are in charge of setting up bounties for the region’s outlaws. Each night, you may place a $30 bounty on a player free of charge(or increase an existing bounty by $30). You are reasonably proficient with a firearm, but still in training. - The Man Seeking Vengeance - You will win in a duel against The Six Fingered Man(Outlaw).
Outlaw-Aligned Actions and Roles Actions- - Ban: You may ban one person. - Hold-up: This action steals all money from the person being held up.
Roles- note: due to size restrictions of the game, it's likely there will only be 2 rogues. If so, the rogues will be given the option of taking the 'Secret' role, and using it instead of the role they are randomly assigned. - The Six-Fingered Man: You have a Dueling Rank just like Town-aligned players. With your Night Action, you can permanently increase your dueling Rank above the next two town-aligned players. Starts with a $30 bounty. - The Matriarch : You may use your Night Action to divine whether a person has a role. Starts with a $30 bounty. - Last Outlaw Standing (Acquired Role): The last outlaw standing gains a Dueling Rank higher than all living Town-aligned players. Town members can not gain a higher Dueling Rank than the Last Outlaw Standing through use of items.
Vote formatting - Votes and unvotes must be formatted as bold and red in order to count. - To change your vote, you must first unvote your current vote.
Inactivity and Proxies - ROMS is a time commitment. Dropping out of a game creates an imbalance in the game for the other players. Please sign up only if you can commit to playing. - Any player who has not posted for one whole Day and Night cycle has 24 hours to make a post or be removed from the game as an inactive. Inactives will be warned at the end of each Night. - No proxies. - Should you need to resign, please send the moderators a PM. If a replacement is available, the resigning player will be replaced. - Alignment of inactive or resigning players that are not replaced will be revealed for the first instance, and then alternate between not-revealed and revealed for any further instances.
The Wiki -The moderators are not responsible for the wiki. Feel free to maintain it yourselves! Replacements -Feel free to signup as a replacement at any time, by posting in the sign-up thread or sending Bunnylaroo or Vantastic a PM. Game End -The game ends when we (the moderators) decide that a team has won, and no reasonable/possible actions can change the outcome. Behavior -Please remember, this is a GAME. Don't take things personally and don't resort to personal attacks on others. There are real humans behind all the text. Current Player List (9)

Can items sell out? (Be no longer purchaseable) How does one get more money? Is it only by dualing?
I'm confused how abstain votes work. Can you give examples?

I like what you've done and I like that you've made it clearer what duelling ranks are.
I'm still in, though God knows I won't be trying to play from my phone. I like my smartphone but the screen is too small for me to make out much at all. Such a headache. Consequently, my activity will be limited to evenings and weekends, at whatever times I feel awake enough to get involved.

Can items sell out? (Be no longer purchaseable) How does one get more money? I'm confused how abstain votes work. Can you give examples? Items do not sell out. The only source for money in this smaller version of the game, is the Deputy(via bounties). I had to cut a lot of economical aspects of the game when making it smaller. I decided that dueling is more important for the western theme and worked with that as the primary core of the game. The town can still 'save' money over time from Hold-ups by placing strategic bounties, or by crossing their fingers and hoping to not get held up. Here is an example of dueling, and lynching, in a 13 player game where 7 votes are needed for the 50%+1 quota: Example 1: 50%+1 votes accumulated on ONE player, straight lynch Vantastic - 7 votes(lynched) Furare - 3 votes Abstain - 2 votes Example 2: 50%+1 is met, top 2 candidates duel Vantastic - 5 votes (duel) Furare - 4 votes (duel) Abstain - 2 votes Example 3: 50%+1 is met, Not a clear candidate for 2nd duelist, so nothing happensVantastic - 4 votes Furare - 3 votes Misty - 3 votes Example 4: 50%+1 is met, Abstain is a duel candidate, so nothing happensVantastic - 5 votes (duel) Furare - 3 votes Abstain - 4 votes (duel) Note:::I modified the signups and replacements section. It looks like we're tentatively at 10 signups, with 2 replacements. We could run the game as it is, or with a few more signups.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to drop out of this for now as I'll be away on holiday from 10th to 24th August, and won't have internet during that time, but if you need a replacement after I get back I'd be happy to join in then.

I think that breaks of 2-3 days to accommodate real life issues are fine. We can all agree that having a player is more valuable than keeping the game on a strict schedule(especially with small games).
If anyone can find just one or two more people, that'd be great. I am going to try to contact firebolt and riss, to see if they are available.

Ergh. I'm unfortunately going to have to sit this out, which is sad because I'm still excited by the concept. Last game taught me I just don't have time if anything at all is going on, and I think I have plans every weekend in August, as well as being away at least twice in September. Nevermind that our new product is FINALLY launching tomorrow.

I'll be honest, there's little point in running the game with only one rogue (8- players). It would be over in 3-4 days, and play out like a vanilla game. For 12-16 players, it could be run with two rogues, and might be long enough to be worth the while.
With 9 to 11 players, it's tough to balance any ROMS game because 1 rogue is too weak, and 2 rogues is too strong (generally).
I'd rather not run the game, in hopes that it can be run years from now. If we only have time/players for interim vanilla games, then that's what we should run. Otherwise, we need to consider moving back to the YPP forums. To regain interest in ROMS, maybe we should have a vanilla/roles light game there? This game is too complicated to be considered roles-light.
